Unit 8 Section 2 : Division Methods for Whole Numbers and Decimals

In this section we look at division involving decimals.

Example Questions

Dividing by 10, 100, 1000 etc.
We can divide by numbers like 10, 100, 1000 and so on by moving the decimal point.
We move the decimal point left by as many places as there are zeros in the number we divide by.

Q: 4321 ÷ 100
 A: 43.21 (decimal point moved 2 places left because there are two zeros in 100)

Q: 126.3 ÷ 10
 A: 12.63 (decimal point moved 1 place left because there is one zero in 10)

Dividing by other numbers
Sometimes when we divide a whole number by another whole number we get a decimal answer.
